Stewards' Council
Wednesday, March 19

Identity Theft: We’ll present a seminar on how to protect yourself from identity theft. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country. The Federal Trade Commission reports that for the 4th year in a row identity theft topped the list of consumer complaints. Identity theft accounted for more than 42 percent of all complaints lodged in the FTC Consumer Sentinel database in 2004, up 40 percent from 2002. Ten million American consumers discovered their personal information had been used to open fraudulent bank, credit card, or utility accounts, or used to commit other crimes. More than 50 percent of identity theft victims were the victims of credit card and other types of account fraud. Two raffles will be conducted at each meeting for $250 and $100 gift cards to Shop N’ Save or Schnucks—both Local 688 member-supplied grocery chains. Stewards Council is held at 7:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the following months at Local 688’s meeting center on 4349 Woodson Road: January, February, March, April, May, September, October and November. All members are invited—steward and non-steward—and eligible to win. Members can only win once throughout the year. The Executive Board meets with the Shop Stewards eight times per year to help Stewards learn about issues affecting their union. Each meeting, which is open to the Local's 500 Stewards as well as non-stewards, provides a State of our Union address, including bargaining, organizing, shop reports, financials and political education. The meetings provide Stewards - who serve as the union's direct link to the rank-and-file members at large - first-hand information about union activities, as well as an opportunity to network with colleagues from other shops.

Stewards' Classes
Saturday, April 12

Member education has long been a priority for Local 688 members. This year's program is revamped to focus on two basic steward responsibilities: communicating with members and representing them on the shop floor. Local 688's educators will lead the program--using your involvement and group exercises to make it relevant to your day-to-day life on the shop floor. This is a great opportunity for stewards to network throughout Local 688's diverse membership and industries. Come join us for the day. Register by emailing Clint Zweifel at czweifel@688online.org. Lunch and continental breakfast will be provided. Also, please send Clint any topics that you would like covered in the classes.
