A Voice for Local 688
Twelve Members Bring Experience, Independent Rank-and-File Perspective to IBT Convention for Local 688 Membership
This issue of Get Involved provides special focus on the Local 688 Delegates to the 2006 IBT Convention, held the last week of June.
This was my first Convention as an official delegate and principal officer of Local 688. Before I began organizing a slate of potential delegates last year, I thought about qualities to seek in each individual. First, I wanted each delegate to be an active member in his or her respective workplace—someone whom other members view as an experienced and respected leader. Second, Local 688’s diversity, both in membership and industry, is a key strength. I wanted that diversity represented at the Convention. Third, I strived for independence—leaders who have an open mind and ideas on how to make our union stronger and more relevant for members.
Each of your delegates and alternates brought those qualities to this Convention. We come from different backgrounds and industries but share a dedication to growth, knowing it is the best way to gain bargaining power and make a difference in people’s lives. Seeing each of your delegates bring that dedication to the convention was an honor. Your delegates continued our commitment to expand Local 688’s role in helping families for generations to come.
