Rank-and-File Members are Teamster Local 688’s Leaders
For UPS—Camdenton Feeder Driver Ralph Ahart, serving as delegate to the 2006 IBT Convention was a special experience—one he wishes every member could witness.
"I came into this open-minded but focused on my own work as a UPS Teamster," Ahart said. "It was awakening to see members from other industries talking about their experiences. It’s difficult to grasp how big we really are as a Local and International union until you see all of the delegates gathered in one place."
The 27th IBT Convention began Monday, June 26 and lasted through Friday, June 30. Delegates spoke on issues, served on committees, nominated General Executive Board candidates, voted on 43 resolutions, passed constitutional changes and listened to guest speakers. The General Executive Board is comprised of 22 officers and three trustees from throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Members vote directly on nominated candidates in a mail ballot election this October and November. Guests addressing the convention included former U.S. Senator John Edwards, (D-NC); U.S. Senator Joe Biden, (D-DE); U.S. Representative Pete Hoekstra, (R-MI); actor Kiefer Sutherland; radio show host and comedian Al Franken and actor Danny Glover.
Local 688 President and Delegate Dave Lalumondier said he was especially happy with how Local 688’s delegates worked together, shared ideas and formed consensus around issues.
"Mike (Goebel) did a good job of setting a foundation of expectations for our delegates," Lalumondier said. "They came to the convention as Teamster leaders with an open mind and ideas on how to make the Teamsters union better. We had the strongest rank-and-file contingent of any Teamster local union."
Each morning Local 688’s delegates met with each other to discuss upcoming issues, including resolutions, bylaw changes to candidates.
"I wish every member could see the entire Convention," Ahart said. "It truly is a democratic process where we had open, honest discussion about a wide range of issues. I really feel we are at a turning point as an organization. We have a great opportunity for growth."
