Teamsters Local 688 is a union on the move that is positioned for growth.

Secretary-Treasurer Michael Goebel announced an exciting five-point plan for 2006.

  1. Develop a strategic organizing plan for growth that increases bargaining strength. A field plan will be based upon research that identifies Local 688’s bargaining strengths and opportunities to expand the union’s reach within those industries. Goebel has petitioned the IBT to make this a cooperative effort where research and organizing resources can be shared. The idea is to focus organizing efforts in industries where Local 688 has a competitive advantage. Members can call Organizer Steve Johnson at 314.513.5812 to learn how they can help.
  2. Move to a more efficient, receptive building. Goebel said members want to move to a more efficient, updated and accessible facility. The Executive Board has initiated a search process with goal of completing the move by the end of 2006. The union will maintain the Hannibal, Missouri office in its current location.
  3. Redevelop website and Internet strategy to focus on union activism and growth. Local 688 has created a destination site and communication forum for the active Local 688 members and non-union workers who want to organize. Members will immediately notice the design changes when they view the new site, but some of the most important additions to the site are in how it can communicate with visitors. In addition to the e-newsletter for members, Local 688 developed a section of the site dedicated to non-members who are interested in learning more about the Teamsters. Those individuals can then register for a regular e-newsletter that will provide them updates on organizing campaigns, union activities and other stories of how Teamsters are making a difference at work and in the community.
  4. Develop a new member orientation plan that encourages involvement. Goebel said he wants to make new member orientation a key part of union steward training, bringing that important responsibility to the shop floor. Stewards Classes will be held in spring and will have a strong focus on how members can organize their workplaces and help non-union workers learn more about being union. In addition, the classes will provide a toolbox of information for members, including grievance procedure, contract enforcement, labor law, workers’ compensation, etc.
  5. Continually modernize the union’s operation to increase agility and responsiveness. Goebel said the Executive Board is committed to constantly evaluating staff structure and organization to ensure Local 688 is performing at peak level for members. This includes continuing enhanced training opportunities for staff and active members, developing key relationships with community, religious and labor leaders throughout Missouri and identifying ways to better serve members and reach out to non-members through technology.
