"I think people on Local 688’s leadership team aren't about 'what I did' and 'what I can do.' It's about 'what we did' and 'what we can do.' And included in 'we' are members"

David Lalumondier: President

Lalumondier began working at St. Joe/Doe Run lead smelter in 1973 as a laborer, working his way up to the machine shop as a sheet metal worker. After rising to chief steward and leading contract negotiation committees, Local 688 hired him as a business representative in 1992. Lalumondier has extensive National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) experience. He became Vice President and Director of Negotiations in January 2001 and President in December 2004. Lalumondier manages staff negotiation of more than 100 collective bargaining agreements. He is Labor Health Institute President, providing health care for 6,000 active and retired members and their dependents.

“Unity sounds so simple that it can be taken for granted, but the power of a union contract is real,” Lalumondier said. “We must work to negotiate agreements that set high standards for industries.”

Lalumondier can empathize with challenges workers face when they do not receive compensation and working conditions they deserve. Lalumondier spent 19 years working for Doe Run Company (originally St. Joe Lead Company), a lead smelter that has received much criticism for its environmentally harmful practices that have made it the biggest polluter in the state of Missouri, according to the EPA's Toxic Release Inventory.

Lalumondier has helped many members improve their job quality in his roles as Business Agent, Vice President and now President - though he avoids taking individual credit for any accomplishment. He said he especially enjoys getting to know members. "When you know people and their families, then you understand the impact it has when you help them," Lalumondier says. "It makes me proud to know those I represent are able to enjoy a better quality of life."
